Railroad promoter, born in Co Antrim, Ireland. The son of Alexander Brown, he joined his father in Baltimore, MD (1802), was influential in the construction of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, and became the company's treasurer (182734). He was a cautious director of the family firm, Alexander Brown & Sons (183459). He gave generously to the House of Refuge and the Peabody Institute of Baltimore.
