The largest living bivalve mollusc (Tridacna gigas); length up to 135 cm/2½ ft; weight over 250 kg/550 lb; found in Indo-Pacific seas in shallow water; its mantle tissues contain many microscopic algae, which it digests. (Class: Pelecypoda. Family: Tridacnidae.)
