gila monster

An American lizard of family Helodermatidae; the only venomous lizard (venom is a nerve poison, but the bite is seldom fatal); length, up to 600 mm/24 in; dark with yellow mottling; bead-like scales; blunt head; fat tail; eats eggs and small vertebrates; two species: gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) and Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum).
