Film director, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. A student of theatre design and later of film, she won a scholarship to the Film and Television School in Sydney. Early works include the drama The Singer and the Dancer (1976), which won the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Short. Several of her films focus attention on the difficulties facing independent women, such as My Brilliant Career (1979), High Tide (1987), The Last Days of Chez Nous (1991), and Little Women (1996). Later films include Oscar and Lucinda (1997) and Charlotte Gray (2001). She has won many AFI awards, including Best Film and Best Director.
Gillian Armstrong (born December 18, 1950 in Melbourne, Australia) is a film director.
Her feature length film My Brilliant Career (1979), an adaptation of Miles Franklin's novel of the same name, was the first Australian feature length film to be directed by a woman for 46 years.
Since then, Armstrong has specialised in period drama, directing films including Oscar and Lucinda (1997) and Charlotte Gray (2001).
