He edited the Resto del Carlino (195568) and Corriere della Sera (196872) newspapers, and became a Republican Party senator (1972) and party leader (197987). He held various ministerial posts, was prime minister, and then became president of the senate (198794). As a historian he was an expert on the Risorgimento.
