grass snake

A harmless snake native to the Old World from Europe to SE Asia, and to North America; lives near water; swims well; eats mainly frogs; anal gland emits foul-smelling secretion when alarmed; often called water snake in the USA - a name also used for snakes of other groups. (Genus: Natrix, many species. Family: Colubridae.)
