Freshwater fish (Thymallus thymallus) widespread in clean swift rivers of N Europe; length up to 50 cm/20 in; body silvery with longitudinal violet stripes; good food fish and popular with anglers. (Family: Thymallidae; sometimes placed in Salmonidae.)
