Alec (James) Stewart - Honours

Cricketer, born in Merton, Greater London. He began playing for Surrey in 1981, made his Test debut in 1990, and by the end of the 2003 season had played in a record 133 Tests, scoring 8463 runs and 15 centuries, and making 273 dismissals (a wicket-keeping record). Undaunted by his already weighty responsibilities as opening batsman and wicketkeeper, he took over as England captain (1998–9), leading them to their first win in a five-test series for 12 years (1998). A highly effective forcing batsman, his career has been hampered by selectorial indecision about whether or not he should keep wicket. He scored a century in each innings v West Indies at Bridgetown in 1993–4. He announced his retirement from international and county cricket in 2003. His father, Mickey Stewart, played for and captained Surrey and won England caps, as well as managing the national side.

Alec James Stewart OBE (born 8 April 1963 in Merton, Surrey) is a retired English cricketer, a right-handed batsman-wicketkeeper and former captain of the English cricket team. He is the most capped English Test cricketer, having played in an English Record of 133 Test matches. He made his England debut in the first Test of the 1989/90 tour of the West Indies, along with Nasser Hussain, who would eventually replace him as England captain.

He continued as an England player for five more seasons, and became only the fourth player to score a century in his 100th Test at Old Trafford.

In 1994 at the Kensington Oval in the West Indies he became only the 7th English batsmen to score centuries in both innings of a test match. His highest Test score, 190, against Pakistan in the first Edgbaston Test on 4th June 1992 - a match that was drawn. On the other hand, Stewart has the dubious honour of having the lowest batting average of any player to have scored 8000 or more runs in Test cricket.

He is also the younger son of a former English Test cricketer, Micky Stewart.
