Dutch politician, lawyer, and journalist, born in Breda, S Netherlands. He was a founder of Democraten '66 (D66), which he led in parliament in 1967. He resigned as leader in 1973 but remained in parliament until 1977. In 19823 he was minister of defence, then in the Upper House until 1986, when he was again leader of D66. He became deputy prime minister and foreign minister in 1994.
Henricus Antonius Franciscus Maria Oliva (Hans) van Mierlo (born August 18, 1931) is a Dutch journalist and politician.
After obtaining his Law degree from Nijmegen's Catholic University, he was a domestic editor at a major Dutch newspaper named Algemeen Handelsblad. Van Mierlo was Minister of Defense from 1981-1982 and served as a member of the Dutch senate from 1983-1986.
Hans van Mierlo concluded his political career as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1994-1998 in the first cabinet of Wim Kok.
