Deep-bodied, herring-like fish (Alosa pseudoharengus), locally abundant along the American Atlantic seaboard; length up to 40 cm/16 in; migrates into rivers (Mar/Apr) to spawn in slow backwaters; commercially fished using traps and nets (seines). (Family: Clupeidae.)
