Jurist and legal theorist, born in Prague, Czech Republic. Professor at Vienna, Cologne, Geneva, Prague, Harvard, and Berkeley, he is best known as the creator of the ‘pure theory of law’ (Reine Rechtslehre, 1934), in which the science of law is required to be exclusively normative and pure, not practical. His work was extremely influential in the 20th-c.
