hawfinch

A stout finch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) native to Europe, Asia, and N Africa; golden-brown with black face; bill huge, strong, used for cracking tree fruits; shy, inhabits treetops in mature woodland. The name is also used for some birds of the genus Eophona. (Family: Fringillidae.)
