Leader of the ‘Disciples of Christ’, otherwise known as Campbellites, born near Ballymena, Antrim, NE Northern Ireland. He emigrated to the USA with his father in 1809, in 1813 succeeding him as pastor of an independent Church at Brush Run, PA. He advocated a return to the simple Church of New Testament times, and in 1826 published a translation of the New Testament. In 1841 he founded Bethany College in West Virginia.
