Herbert Bayard Swope

Journalist, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. A World War 1 correspondent for the New York World, he won a 1917 Pulitzer Prize for his dispatches. He became executive editor of the newspaper in the 1920s, promoted numerous crusades, and developed a widely imitated Op Ed page. An associate of Bernard Baruch, he reportedly coined the phrase ‘cold war’, usually credited to Baruch.

Herbert Bayard Swope (January 5, 1882 - June 20, 1958) was a U.S. editor and journalist. He is known for his quote, "I can't give you a sure-fire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: try to please everybody all the time."
