hercules beetle

A dark, shiny beetle, one of the largest in the world; males up to 17 cm/7 in long, females smaller; adults nocturnal. It belongs to the rhinoceros beetle group, in which the males have a slender, recurved horn on their heads. (Order: Coleoptera. Family: Scarabeidae.)
